Obituary of John Dixon Reed

Please share a memory of John to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.

John Dixon Reed, Jr (“Jack”) exited this life August 2021. He was born July 8, 1954, in Ohio to John Dixon Reed and Marianne Louise Von Derau Reed.

He was preceded in death by his parents and by John “Mete Ting” Parsons. He is survived by David Hemphill, Tom “Par” Parsons, Blake Senseman, the Bessons and Haley Comett.

Jack moved from Tipp City, Ohio to Austin, Texas in 1981 and worked for Whole Foods Market, beginning at the Crossroads store.  He was introduced to John Mackey by Mete Ting and from that time forward he served, variously, as Accounting Controller, Store Team Leader, head of Team Member Services (a brand new team that Jack conceptualized) and, briefly, head of Information Technology. Jack was an early visionary at Whole Foods Market and, through the realizations of his visions, he left an indelible mark on Whole Foods Market.

Jack loved to cook, develop recipes, and host dinner parties where everything was discussed from the universe to politics.  The kitchen was the heart of his home and his heart was in the kitchen. He also enjoyed travel and visited every state in the continental U.S. as well as many countries in the Americas and Europe. He spent extended periods in Florida and Amsterdam. He was a writer of science fiction, cookbooks and travelogs.
