Obituary of Celestino Chapa

Celestino Chapa, Jr., 69 of Austin, Texas passed away unexpectedly on February 12, 2021.  He was deeply devoted to his religion, and we can take solace knowing he is now with our Heavenly Father. 

Born and raised in Austin, he was a Johnston High School graduate and Video Producer at City of Austin ATXN government access channel, formerly known as Channel 6, with 25+ years of service before retiring.  He was best known for his quick wit, charm, and generosity. 

His passions included religion, family, music, video and photography.  Helping people capture precious moments was his specialty.  He was an avid church volunteer and participant and last but not least, a devout UT Longhorn and Dallas Cowboy football fan.

In 2019, he traveled to the Holy Land on a pilgrimage with his sister, Bennie, her husband, Buddy, and friends.  So as not to overlook a sacred site, they spent a couple of weeks crisscrossing Jerusalem to take in each hallowed place.

Chapa was a devoted son, brother, father, and grandfather.  He was preceded in death by his parents, Lupe and Celestino Chapa, Sr., nephew John Albert, and his beloved dog and loyal companion, Lillie.  He is survived by his daughters, Tina Michelle Chapa and Virginia Chapa; granddaughter, Rena Schroer and husband, Richard “Sparky," III.: his sister, Bennie Saldana and husband, Buddy; his brothers, Felix Chapa and wife, Esther, and David Chapa and wife, Connie.  In addition, he is survived by his nieces and nephews, Albert Barba and wife, Keya, Leonard Barba, Joe Chapa and wife, Betty Jane, Michelle Bermudez, David Chapa, Jr. and wife, Emily, Melissa Chapa, Celestino Chapa III and wife, Angelica, and Hector Chapa, and numerous other loving family and friends.

His love and devotion to his family and friends shall always be remembered and celebrated.

Visitation will be held from 9:00-10:30 a.m. with Recitation of Holy Rosary beginning at 10:30 a.m. on Tuesday, February 23, 2021 at Mission Funeral Home - South Side, 6204 S. First St., Austin, Texas.  A Funeral Mass will begin at 12:00 p.m. also on Tuesday, February 23, 2021 at Santa Cruz Catholic Church, 1100 Main St., Buda, Texas.  Interment at Assumption Cemetery, Austin, Texas, will take place following Mass.

Due to the Coronavirus /  COVID-19 Restrictions from the City of Austin,

capacity levels are restricted at funeral homes, churches, and cemeteries.

Each person entering the funeral home, church, and cemetery will be required to wear a mask

and to practice social distancing of 6 feet or more.   If you are ill or are concerned about the virus,

it is recommended that you not attend services.
