I worked with Mr. Ortiz for several years. He was a kind man always laughing and joking. When watching him sing while playing with the band or singing at the unit. He had so much compassion it was beautiful. It is very difficult to think you have passed. Ortiz you impacted people with your presence and you will definitely be missed but not forgotten. Love and miss you!

SHORTY ORTIZ -THE POPE OF MONTOPOLIS
Back in august 1974 - having just come back from Mexico - where I tried to join a Mexican band - but I couldn’t because of visa problems - I put up a sign on a record store in Austin on East 7th Street selling Chicano music saying : “guitarist looking to join a Latin Band” and lo n’ behold I get a call from Shorty Ortiz to come jam at the Riviera Lounge in Montopolis and there it where I encountered Shorty & the Corvetts along with Ben Marines.
That night changed my destiny in life forever. I think at first - they thought I was a narc - I was a 21 year old long haired hippie kid- they couldn’t figure out why I wanted to play Polkas, Cumbias & Boleros.
And then I came to find out that Shorty was a super Star in the Chicano music circuit!
Shorty had a hit with the song “Pledging my love” the Johnny Ace hit. Shorty took an old R n’ B song and brought it to the Chicano groove. Shorty had played the Cotton Bowl with Little Joe -so it seemed at this time that he was surfing on the wave of success and his reputation. So Ben & Shorty took me under their wings and showed me the ropes of Tejano music. That August 1974 —Fred Gomez Carrasco was having his shootout/stand off -at the Huntsville penitentiary in Texas and which was covered constantly on the radio. And conjunto groups where singing corridos about him. So Ben said - we are going to call you Carrasco as they could not pronounce my real German name. That is how I got the name Carrasco and it has stuck through all the years.
Shorty & I —through the years had stayed in touch and on our last call he said he wanted me -to help get him -
to do movies - so we talked about that - he would have absolutely great!
It is hard for me to imagine a world without Shorty - he was always laughing and kind. Shorty was such a great guy and I love him so much. Shorty was a true leader - he was bigger than life - it was like meeting Zapata ! Shorty had electricity and charisma - his smile was like the sun in the sky.
I believe that Shorty should have gotten more recognition from the Texas music scene for his contributions to Latin music !
I say shorty deserves a statue in Montapolis.
Shorty Ortiz the Pope of Montapolis.
I love you my brother R.I.P.

Que Buena Gente era mi camarada Shorty Ortiz. You will never meet a nicer man than Shorty, I guarantee it. He was a very talented musician, he loved life and he loved people, all people----if there was ever a man amongst us who lived the creed Jesus taught us about Love Thy Neighbor--he was the man !
Shorty, Que Dios te Bendiga, y nos veremos alla en la otra vida.

I worked with Lupe back in the day at Travis County Juvenile Court. He was a counselor willing to help and support juveniles in trouble. He was a great person and willing to help all both adults and juveniles. He was always available to all. He will be missed. He loved his music and spoke fondly of his family. May you rest in peace until we meet again.

Shorty you will be missed by us. You always showed your joy when your grandkids walked into the house. They will always remember the ice cream at the end of their visits. You were such kind and giving man. You never judged me and was full of great advice. I will miss your voice and phone conversations. I pray for our family to have peace and know the Lords love just as you did. Love you Mr. Ortiz, Grandpa Shorty.
