Elaine, Eileen and all the family............I got to see Bert a few times over the years, but I knew him more by Eileen talking about him. He was a giant of a man in her eyes. He was a hero to her and I know how very much he is going to be missed. I'm so very sorry. My heart hurts for you all. Bert was an incredible husband, brother, father, grandfather, brother in law, friend, and so much more. He has truly left a legacy. Our thoughts and prayers are with you all.

When David and I moved to Austin we thought we knew about the Longhorns!
After meeting Bert and having some great times because of his and Elaine’s hospitality, for football parties, we learned all about the Longhorns!!! Whether in person are through text or on the phone his good bye was always a Hook’em ! He was a wonderful kind and caring Christian, and I look forward to seeing him in heaven some day flashing the Hook’em symbol!!

It was a great blessing in my life to know and love my friend ‘BeachBoyBert’. We share a love for The Beach Boys; The University of a Texas Longhorn football team(s); and above that, a love for our families and The Lord Jesus Christ. It was my privilege as a Pastor to baptize Bert at Bannockburn Baptist Church after another great friend, Bob Morris had led him to Christ.
We had many conversations in life and shared many life stories. I will miss my friend until our reunion day in Heaven.
My prayer is that God will comfort and strengthen Elaine and family as you grieve Bert’s passing. May you cling to truth as is written in 1 Thessalonians 4.14:
“For since we believe that Jesus died and was raised to life again, we also believe that when Jesus returns, God will bring back with him the believers who have died.”

To the Smith family
I worked with Bert and he always put a smile on my face. He will never be forgotten. I am glad we have another sweet angel up above to look after us. I will always remember seeing him and hearing him say "Whats up, Robyn bobbin". I am truly saddened by the passing of Bert. So once again, "HOOK EM"

Elaine & Eileen and family,
So very sorry to hear of Bert's passing. He was a true treasure and I can see from all the pictures in the
Memorial Video that he was loved by all.
My greatest memories were from times spent in Sherman visiting our Nanny & DD (Big Dad) as Bert would say.
Bert also helped me get over my blankie that I had at 5yrs old by making a trade for a pot holder that he made in exchange
for my blankie. I thought he hung the moon so I made the trade. He then put it in the trash and the trash got picked up. When it came time for my nap....well need I say more!
Its obvious he loved his family & The UNIVERSITY of Texas.
Deepest sympathies,
Shari Hix Anderson

Daddy-I love you so much and I miss you everyday. My world has turned upside down with you gone. You were the first man I ever loved and will always hold our relationship near & dear to my heart. It just doesn't seem real to me yet. I will always be your baby and I can't wait to see you again. #hookem

Elaine and family,
So many childhood memories returned when I heard of Bert's passing. He was one of the sweetest people I have ever known. We loved those hot summers in Sherman
playing on the stacked railroad ties by our grandparents home, flipping over the metal bar on Aunt Tyne's house and countless hours playing board games on the floor at Nanny and Big Dad's. He will be greatly missed.

Bert was one of the sweetest , kindest and funniest guys I have ever known. He was such a good teacher and all the kids wanted to be in his class at Palm Elementary. I wanted to be in his class. We reconnected recently on Facebook and had fun remembering Pee Wee Herman, his love of the Beach Boys and the Cars and UT.
He had his Mcgruff dressed just perfectly in shorts, shades and Hawaiian shirt. He was a very special person to everybody who met him.
Even though he supported UT and I am an Aggie, he let me be his friend. It was a gift to have worked with him and known him and I knew it then and I know it now.
My deepest condolences to all the family and I know he is enjoying some spectacular beaches and is making everybody laugh up there too.

Bert, you were my first and closest friend when I moved to Texas. And even though we were miles apart on our favorite sports teams, we were like brothers...we had great times coaching, cooking out, swimming, playing street ball, scaring kids at Halloween.....everything our families did....while time and miles have separated us for many years, when we have gotten together, its like we didn't miss a beat.....this world and me personally was blessed to have you and I will remember you always and keep you in my heart my brother....rest high on that mountain....love you brother...

From the moment we met at Lake Lavone he made me feel like part of the family. His corny jokes that even I got always made me smile. Bert had a love for living life and enjoying every new adventure. His family came first , he was a mender of relationships, a sports enthusiast, teacher and friend to all. I will miss him and will treasure the memories we made. Rest In Peace my Brother.
