I hope you'll forgive the length of my comments. Sophia was just this fiercely funny, sensitive, and strong warrior woman. It's not hard to summon up some great memories of her:
- On the second day of freshman year (high school), I walked into Warren Hall--- which I thought I was empty--- and stumbled upon Sophia kissing this boy named Bobby. I froze, blushed red right up to the roots of my hair, and Sophia just started laughing. She ran over, gave me a hug, and said, “It’s all right, baby girl.” That’s how I met Sophia.
- Sophia waxing philosophic with Mrs. Dower in Hathaway. Sophia always was wise. She truly was an old soul. Who chooses to study Latin?!? Sophia did.
- Hanging out in the clayroom or the AV at Milton.
- Sophia poured into a bright red dress (made by Mrs. Cardenas, I think) as my prom “date”. Sophia dropped a cherry tomato into her décolletage during dinner that evening, looked to her left and right to see if anyone else noticed, and then gave me a wink across the table.
- Sophia, with this lovely Texas gentility, explaining to my Dad that it’s pronounced, “peh-kawn,” not “pee-kan” pie.
- Sophia landing at the airport in hippy-dippy Eugene, OR, strutting across baggage claim in her boots and skintight jeans, and whispering to me, “I don’t think the food here is going to be very good.”
- Sitting on a sunny patio in Austin on her birthday, and listening to her talk about “my kids” at the shelter, long after she had gone on leave.
- That enormous monster of a dog (the white one, shoot, I can’t remember his name) that easily outweighed Sophia, but became a wimpering, love-y pup when he heard her voice.
- Sophia laughing when her beloved Toyota Corolla was rear-ended. And she had so much compassion for the newly-licensed driver that hit her, but WOW, was she ticked off.
- How she loved making salsa (fig!) with her nieces.
- How fiercely proud she was of her family. How much she loved living with Jennifer and Stephanie. She was so grateful to both of you for the home you created.
Dear Mr. and Mrs. Cardenas, thank you for sharing Sophia with us at Milton. I will always treasure our friendship. I am so very sorry for your loss.

I met Sophia in high school at Milton Academy. She may have been my little sister, but I learned more from her than I ever taught. She was warm, loving, intelligent, tough, and generous. I will always remember her running towards me with her signature Wonder Woman run, in her tight jeans and boots with all the sass in the world. She was fire and I am blessed to have known her, and called her sister. Thank you to God and to her family for gifting us with her. May God bring you peace in this difficult time.

My first memory is when she was a year old and her bubbling aura. She never lost it either cause she was the most outgoing and giving lady I know . And a smile that was contagious. We will miss you but now you'll be the Angel of happiness

I want to send my prayers and thoughts to the family of Sophia Cardenas. She and I worked together at ACS for many years. She had the most beautiful spirit. I was so saddened to hear of her passing this morning. Though we had talked in years as life took us different directions, I often thought about her. We had some great stories. She taught me how to braid African American hair and I taught her how to laugh. Well, she laughed at me doing hair at least. Ha. So many great stories that are flooding back to me. Some of the best times were driving her home at night after work because she lived on the other side of the street. She always talked about her love for her family. Always. Rest In Peace my old friend. I hope one day all of us from the shelter days can reunite at the “Library” in heaven and share some stories and laughs.
