Obituary of Dr. Ramona Carol Lopez
Our dearly loved mother, wife, daughter, sister, aunt and grandmother, Dr. Ramona Carol Lopez, age 58, of Austin, Texas was called home by our Heavenly Father on Monday, April 08, 2019.
She was preceded in death by her mother, Margaret Rachel Thompson. She is survived by her husband of 38 years, Rocky Lopez; her children Benjamin, Rachel, Nicholas, Daniel and Laura Lopez; her grandson Jasper Smith; her father Ovie Lee Griffith; and her siblings David Griffith and Diana Weaver.
Born in Louisville, Kentucky, Ramona decided at a young age that she wanted to pursue a career in medicine. Her determination grew as she watched her mother battle breast cancer for over nine years. She attended the University of Cincinnati for her undergraduate degree, where she met her husband, Rocky Lopez. Already a mother, she completed her medical degree at Baylor College of Medicine, and then moved to Austin, Texas, where she established her own pediatric practice and became fluent in Spanish to better serve her patients. As a mother of her community, Ramona cared for the children at Pediatrics of South Austin for 25 years.
Ramona always listed her priorities in order of God, family, and service. Defined by service and faith, she participated in medical missions to Mexico, served in AWANA Clubs, worked at special needs camps, and volunteered at a pregnancy resource center, to name a few. She was a Sunday school teacher, a church choir director, and a prayer warrior. She dedicated her life to passionately serving her God, her family and her patients.
Ramona is remembered by her family for her uninhibited drive, resilient strength, and dedicated love. Rocky remembers her adventurous and active spirit; she always loved to hike, run, bike, swim, and travel. Ben remembers her loving wisdom and patience; his most precious memories are of their many, long conversations about life. Rachel remembers her mom as the most fun and caring grandmother: “She always knew what Jasper needed or how to calm him down when I didn’t. She was the perfect example of a strong, yet sweet, loving mother whom I greatly looked up to.” Nick remembers her resolution to constantly improve herself and her loved ones; he has always been inspired by her autonomy and her ability to overcome any obstacle. Daniel remembers her positivity; he remembers her finding hope even in the bleakest parts of life. Laura remembers her love for the little things in life; she had a curiosity about everything, just like a kid, and cared deeply about your every worry. She was greatly loved and will be greatly missed.
