Obituary of Steven "Scott" Gainer

Our Beloved Commander Steven "Scott" Gainer, age 64, of Dahlgren, Virginia, was called by our Heavenly Father on Tuesday, June 20, 2017 in Austin, Texas.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Commander Richard Dale Gainer and Tommye Jeanette (Webster) Gainer.

He is survived by his brother Jeff Gainer; sister Kimberly Gainer; brother in law, Marc Kendrick; nieces, Morgan Kendrick and Christina Munoz; nephew Gary Brandt and numerous other loving family and friends.

Scott was formerly of Corpus Christi. Scott graduated from Richard King High School in 1971. He then attended the University of California in Berkeley California. He also attended Corpus Christi State University where he received his degree in Marine Biology. Upon graduation, he attended and graduated from Navy Officer Candidate School, going on to serve during the seventies and eighties.

With an honorable discharge, Scott returned to Texas to begin working on his Master’s in Geology at the University of Texas in Austin until he was called back to serve in the Persian Gulf War.

After the war, he again returned to Austin where he taught at Austin Community College while he continued on with his Master’s. In 2007 he returned to work for the Navy as a civilian in Dahlgren, VA where he worked until his recent death.

Visitation will begin at 5:00 p.m. Thursday, June 29, 2017 with a Celebration of Life to be held at 7:00 p.m. at Mission Funeral Home Serenity Chapel, 6204 S. First St., Austin, Texas. Committal Services will be held at 10:45 a.m., Friday June 30, 2017 at Fort Sam Houston National Cemetery with Military Honors.
