Obituary of Dr. Marco Montoya

Our beloved Dr. Marco Montoya, age 72, resident of Austin was called by our Heavenly Father on Thursday, November 17, 2016. Dr. Montoya proudly served our country, first in the U.S. Army’s 3rd Infantry Division and was honorably discharged as a 1st Lieutenant and then later with the U.S. Public Health Service as a Captain. He was preceded in death by his father, Agustin Rodriguez Montoya.
Dr. Montoya is survived by his loving children, David Montoya and Lisa Cockrell, her husband, Joel and grandchildren, Jayden Cockrell, Agustin Cockrell, and Riley Cockrell; his mother, Sylvia Flores Montoya; siblings, Lupita Tannatt and her husband, Michael, Pilar Hanson and her husband, Ron, Joseph Montoya, and Patricia Alberico and her husband, Michael; nieces and nephews, Mateo Tannatt, Cristina Hanson, Lucas Hanson and his wife, Erin, Domenick Alberico, Vincent Alberico, and Evie Alberico; and numerous other family and friends. The family of Dr. Montoya would like to extend a special thank you to Teodora Acosta, Dr. Montoya’s very special friend for her care and devotion.
Dr. Montoya dedicated his life to public health, welfare, and education, as well as being a political activist for a variety of public policy issues. In 2014 he campaigned as a Democrat for the U.S. House to represent the 25th Congressional District of Texas. His education, PhD in Socio-Demography, MS in Statistics, and MS in Public Health, was put to good use in helping to shape public policy, primarily but certainly not limited to public health. He conducted research on the effect of pesticides, worked in civil affairs as an officer in the U.S. Army, worked in the U.S. Public Health Service in Science Administration, and worked with the Pan-American Union of Armed Forces Reserve, U.S. House Appropriation Committee, Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board, U.S. Naval War College Distinguished Graduate, and numerous other local boards and committees. He served as a Grant writer and Principle Investigator for the ENLACE Program which helped with the retention of Latino students at Texas State and encouraged the university to become a Hispanic Serving Institution Dr. Montoya also played a pivotal role in many organizations in the Austin area with a focus on the Austin Hispanic community.
Lie in State will begin at 3:00 PM on Wednesday, November 30, 2016 at Mission Funeral Home (EAST), 1615 E. Cesar Chavez Street. Austin, Texas. The family will be available to receive at 5:00 PM
Formal Visitation with begin at 3:00 PM, on Thursday, December 1, 2016 with Recitation of Holy Rosary being held at 7:00 PM, at Mission Funeral Home Serenity Chapel (SOUTH), 6204 S. First Street. Austin, Texas.
Mass of Christian Burial will begin at 9:00 AM, on Friday, December 2, 2016 at Sacred Heart Catholic Church, 5909 Reicher Drive. Austin, Texas.
A private burial with full military honors will follow at Ft. Sam Houston National Cemetery in San Antonio, Texas. We request that any donations be made in his name to Boy Scout Troop 489 in Austin Texas
