John Edward Bergmann Jr. December 23, 1921 - April 9, 2007John Edward Bergmann, Jr. died peacefully, Monday, April 9, 2007. He was a resident of Austin for 57 years. John was born December 23, 1921 in San Antonio, Texas. He was the son of John Edward Bergmann Sr. and Ella Lyford Bergmann. John attended Thomas Jefferson High School in San Antonio. He entered Southern Methodist University in 1939 and graduated in 1945. While at SMU, John became a member of the Kappa Alpha Fraternity and served one year as president of his fraternity. John was the manager of the SMU football team for two years. After graduation, he reunited with his long time high school friend, Martha Ann Welch. They married May 11, 1946 and remained happily married for 56 years. John spent much of his life as a salesman for the L.G. Balfour Company and Herff Jones. He went on to start and operate a landscape business. The last five years he spent volunteering at Morris Williams Golf Course where he enjoyed working with manager, Ms. Beth Cleckler and golf course professional Matt Bostelman. John was an avid sportsman and lifelong golfer. He was truly one of a kind; he never met a stranger and had many friends. He was preceded in death by his wife Martha Ann Welch Bergmann and his sister Ella Bergmann Wallace. John is survived by his four children John Edward Bergmann III and wife Donna, Charles Lyford Bergmann and wife Marian, Martha Ann Bergmann Louis and husband Geary, David Bruce Bergmann. He leaves behind six beloved grandchildren John Bergmann IV, Julie Bergmann Rohrer and husband John, Morgan Allison Bergmann, Michael Pearcy, Lindsey Louis, Eric Bergmann and many nieces and nephews. A celebration of his life will be held 4:00 p.m. Tuesday April 17th at Mission Funeral Home Serenity Chapel 6204 S. 1st Street, Austin, Texas. Jane Louis will officiate. The family wishes to thank Dr. Adam Schneider, Dr. D.A. Tweedy and Carol Jones, his caregiver and friend, for their outstanding help throughout his illness. The family also expresses their deepest and most sincere appreciation for the kindness and support given to John from Hospice Austin, especially his nurse Diane Flood,Jane Louis and the staff at Christopher House.
