Obituary of Frank M. Nuñez

Please share a memory of Frank to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.
Our beloved Dad, Frank M. Nuñez, age 83, was called to our Heavenly Father on Thursday, January 18, 2024. Frank was born August 10, 1940, in Austin, Texas. He was preceded in death by his loving wife of 46 years and mother of his children, Ninfa Rodriguez Nuñez; his parents, Nick Nuñez, Sr. and Margarita (Maggie) Martinez Nuñez, and his siblings, Nick Nuñez, Jr., Lole Nuñez, Patsy Salinas and Tony Nuñez, and his sister-in-law, Dolores Nuñez. Frank Nuñez was born and raised in East Austin. After marrying our mom Ninfa and having three boys, he moved the family to South Austin where his princess was born. He remained at 811 Herndon Lane the remainder of his life. He graduated from the old Stephen F. Austin High School in 1960 and attended Nixon Clay College. Growing up Frank spent a lot of time with his grandparents and would share with his kids how special they were to him. He was very close to his grandmother, Mama Lupita. Frank worked hard as a kid shining shoes on 6th Street and delivering the newspaper with his brother Nick who he was extremely close with growing up. Frank was an accomplished trumpet player at a young age playing with Fred Salas and the Latinos where he learned a lot from Fred Salas, his professionalism, music theory, showmanship and being around great musicians. He also played with local groups such as Manny and the Co’s, Manuel Cowboy Donley y Las Estrellas, Augustine Ramirez, Raza Humilde, Mariachi groups and other groups that he would sit in with. Frank was one of the best trumpet players in Austin but was very humble about it. He also formed his own group called Frank Nuñez and the Imperials and was included in the Austin Area Tejano Legends Inaugural Members. Frank also worked as a car parts salesman for over 40 years for Ford Motor Company. Even though Frank was away providing for his family working hard, he always took time to be with his family and friends. He loved to fish, boating, BBQ’s, playing pool and washers, summer vacations in Galveston, Texas, traveling and gambling. As his kids got older, he dropped the band to help his wife at home. When his wife became ill he retired from Ford to care for her. After his wife Ninfa passed away, he met Abby Cantu and they continued to do what he enjoyed, traveling and gambling. Abby helped care for Frank when his health declined. We are grateful for her support in helping us care for him. Frank is survived by his loyal partner, Abeline “Abby” Cantu, his children Frank Nuñez, Jr. (mother of his children, Constance B. Nuñez), Randy Nuñez and his wife, Eva, Edward Nuñez and his wife, Polly, and Brenda Mendoza and her husband, Eric, and his treasured grandchildren, Alexander T. Nuñez, Anastasia Rose Johnson (Dragon), Anna Michelle Braun (Tyler), Kristin Andrea Andersen (Jens), Miranda Platt (Richard), Angelita Lenora Weaver (Dave), Randy Jay Nuñez, Roger Jacob Nuñez, Edward Stephen Nuñez (Christen Miller), Theresa Nuñez (John Uballe), Eric Nicholas Mendoza, Brendan Andrew Mendoza and Mya Luz Mendoza, 12 great grandchildren, his sister-in-laws, Emma Guerrero-Nuñez, Rachel Nuñez, Veronica Nuñez, Delia Hernandez and brother-in-law, George Salinas, as well as numerous nieces, nephews, other loving family members and friends. Serving as pallbearers will be grandsons, Alexander T. Nuñez, Randy Jay Nuñez, Roger Jacob Nuñez, Edward Stephen Nuñez, Eric Nicholas Mendoza, Brendan Andrew Mendoza and honorary pallbearer, great grandson, Samuel Platt. Visitation will be held from 5:00-9:00 p.m. with Recitation of Holy Rosary beginning at 7:00 p.m. on Wednesday, January 31, 2024, at Mission Funeral Home – South Side, 6204 S. First St., Austin, Texas. Mass of Christian Burial will begin at 1:00 p.m. on Thursday February 1, 2024, at San Jose Catholic Church, 2435 Oak Crest Ave., Austin, Texas. Interment will follow at Assumption Cemetery, 3650 S. IH 35 Frontage Rd., Austin, Texas. Fill not your hearts with pain and sorrow, but remember me in every tomorrow. Remember the joy, and the laughter we shared together. Although my leaving causes pain and grief, my going has eased my hurt and given me relief. So dry your eyes and remember me. Because I will remember you and look on with a smile. I won’t be far away, for life goes on, though you can’t see or touch me, God will be near. His love around you soft and clear. And then when you must come this way alone, I’ll greet you with a smile, and say “Welcome Home”.
