Our beloved Augustina “Tina” Sanchez, age 91, was called to our heavenly father on Wednesday, December 21, 2022. She passed peacefully in Creedmoor, Texas where she was surrounded by her niece Emilia “Milly” Hernandez, nephew John Luke Sanchez and many other nieces and nephews. She was greeted in heaven by her parents Ricardo Sanchez and Emilia Caballero Sanchez, her brothers Julian Sanchez, Jacinto Sanchez and wife Juanita, Eulalio “Lalo” Sanchez, her sisters Katarina “Kitty” Thomas, Esperanza “Frances” Loera, Ramona Sanchez, Emilia Sanchez-Hernandez, Consuelo “Connie” Castillo and husband Simon, and Angelita “Angel” Borjas and husband Ruben.
Tina was born on February 5, 1931, in Austin, Texas. She had a very happy and outgoing personality and made friends everywhere she went. Tina was a devout Catholic that loved her faith. She was a Guadalupana at Guadalupe Catholic Church. She also prepared homemade meals and cleaned the homes of the Priests for both Guadalupe and Cristo Rey Churches. When Tina was in her teen years she worked in Michigan alongside her family as a migrant worker picking strawberries and potatoes. Later, she began working as a waitress at El Matamoros Restaurant off East 6th St. and El Gallo Restaurant. While working as a waitress she studied the beautician trade and was able to obtain her cosmetology license. Tina and her sister Ramona were able to open their own Beauty Shop on East 6th Street. They then moved to Houston, TX where they continued their trade and owning their own business. While running the beauty shop in Houston, Tina made time to study and get her GED. She made the decision to move back to Austin into her childhood home on Willow Street. Tina then began a career with the City of Austin and eventually retired from Austin Fire Department. Tina was a very active senior. She attended the Metz and Conley-Guerrero Recreation Center Senior programs for years. While attending the programs Tina was able to experience new things from riding a bike to making crafts alongside the many friends she made.
