Obituary of Lydia M. Zapata
Our beloved mother, Lydia Morin Zapata, passed away peacefully into eternal rest on Wednesday, June 15, 2022 at the age of 86 surrounded by her two loving daughters. Lydia was a devoted wife, mother, mother-in-law, grandmother, great-grandmother and a friend to many.
She is preceded in death by her husband Rudolph Zapata, Sr., sons Randy Zapata, Rene Zapata and sister, Gloria Bueno. She is survived by her children, Rita Mokarzel (Mario), Rudolph Zapata, Jr. (Rosario), Roxanne Gonzales (Luis), Robert Zapata, Roman Zapata (Amanda), and Erick Zapata (Gracie), 22 grandchildren and 23 great-grandchildren.
Lydia was born on April 26, 1936 in Austin, TX. She attended Palm Elementary and Travis High School.
Lydia’s passion was gardening her massive yard and decorating for the holidays. She was very proud of her Halloween decorations and the “Trail of Lights” of Montopolis at Christmas time, which many people enjoyed. She was an outstanding cook and lovingly nourished her family and friends. She was known for her tamales, menudo, fideo, cheesy enchiladas, potato and egg tacos with homemade tortillas and many other delicacies she created in her small kitchen.
Lydia was a longtime member of Dolores Catholic Church and a member of the Ladies of Sodality. She volunteered at the church’s thrift store and regularly traveled to the Valley to take a bus load of clothes for the needy. Her children joined her on many of these outings. Lydia donated countless hours and merchandise at many annual Jamaica church fundraisers. She also provided large amounts of soft drinks and sold many raffle tickets for the church’s door prizes. Lydia also served as an usher at the 5:30 pm mass for many years.
