Obituary of Mary Mojica Herrera

Our beloved Mary Mojica Herrera, age 76, was called to our Heavenly Father on Sunday, June 12, 2022, surrounded by her loving family.  She was preceded in death by her husband of 28 years, Felix Herrera; her parents, Joe and Luisa Mojica; her brothers, Luis Mojica, Alfred Mojica, and Stevie Mojica, and her brother-in-law, Tom Arocha.

Mary is survived by her daughters, Lisa Herrera, Romey Armstrong, and Mindy Alford (Jeffrey); her grandchildren, Carson Armstrong, Carina Armstrong, and Isabella Alford; her siblings, Beatrice Arocha, Henry Mojica (Sylvia), Ray Mojica (Rosemary), Alex Mojica, and Joe Louis Mojica.  In addition, numerous nieces, nephews, other loving family members, and friends.

Mary Mojica Herrera was born on February 28, 1946, in Austin, Texas to Joe, and Luisa Mojica.  A native Texan who retired after 32 years of service at the University of Texas at Austin. She had an incredible work ethic, a positive attitude and continued working very hard several years after retirement. She was remarkably independent, periodically having numerous part-time jobs at once. She was dedicated to working as long as it took any day of the week. She took pride in being very trustworthy to her employers.

Mary was a beautiful person who spread joy and happiness wherever she went with a contagious smile. She was very friendly, loving, and caring. It was very easy for her to share her life stories with complete strangers in line at the grocery store. 

Upon meeting Mary, your first impression would be that she was so sweet and respectful. 

She found great pleasure in spending time with her enormous countless family members and was always on the go. She took any opportunity to travel to go visit her family in other states or to take a vacation with her family members. 

Fall was her favorite time of the year because she loved cooler weather and wearing long-sleeves. Most importantly she looked forward to football season every year. She was a die-hard fan of the Dallas Cowboys and Texas Longhorns. You could expect her to stand up, scream and dance for her team. She was the MVP for most team spirit.  Her favorite colors were yellow and pink. She found daily enjoyment in her favorite soap opera The Young & the Restless. She loved cooking, especially Sunday breakfast for her extended family members. Before she retired from the University of Texas, she invited up to 20 students at a time once a year; to cook them a homemade Tex-Mex meal along with her famous salsa. She definitely loved to sing and dance. She also loved horses and dogs. 

As the sole provider, after losing her beloved husband Felix of 28 years; she was very faithful in supporting her three daughters. As a devoted mother, she always did her very best and gave it her all even when it did not come easy. She had unbelievable strength and faith in God. She inspired her girls to do whatever made them happy in life and she supported their decisions. Through tough times she would always say she would leave it up to God and prayed with her rosary. She believed heavily in prayer. Her daughters could sum up their mom in one word “selfless.”

As a mother-in-law, she was very proud of her US Marine son and would tell everyone about how proud she was of him. They enjoyed comparing body aches with each other and both had a great love for good food.

As a loving grandmother, her greatest joy was seeing her three grandchildren Carson, Carina, and Isabella grow. She loved being silly, singing, dancing, praying, and sharing stories with them. Her grandchildren loved watching football games and Netflix with her. Her profound affection for her grandchildren gave her the willpower and motivation to keep fighting through her insurmountable illnesses. 

Her family deeply misses her. However, they find peace knowing she is reunited with her husband dancing away in heaven for all of eternity. 

The family would like to send heartfelt gratitude to all the staff at Old Settler’s Fresenius Kidney Clinic in Round Rock, TX for taking wonderful care of their mom.

Visitation will be held from 5:00-9:00 p.m. with Recitation of Holy Rosary beginning at 7:00 p.m. on Tuesday, June 21, 2022, at Mission Funeral Home - South Side, 6204 S. First Street, Austin, Texas.

Scripture Service will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Wednesday, June 22, 2022, and also at Mission Funeral Home - South Side.  Interment will follow at Assumption Cemetery, 3650 S. IH 35 Frontage Rd., Austin, Texas.
