Obituary of Gilbert T. Benavides
Our beloved father and grandfather, Gilbert Benavides, was called home on Monday May 9, 2022 at 7:06 p.m. after a hard fought battle with liver cancer. He battled bravely, surrounded by his loving and adoring family throughout, including in his final moments at the age of 73.
Gilbert is survived by his best friend, the love of his life, Rosie Benavides and their 5 children; Monica (Paul), Jimmy (Cynthia), Barbara (Ray), Gilbert Anthony and Phillip. His 13 “favorite” grandchildren; Alexis, Amanda, Amaryssa, Amy, Isaiah, Alaina, Naomi, Lauren, Xavier, Hailey, Joshua, Jazmine and Lincoln and 4 great-grandchildren; Leah, Adylina, Ayden, and Benjamin. As well as his siblings Jimmy (Yolanda), Mary (Joe), Alice (Johnny), and Jesse. He was preceded in death by his parents Christobal and Audelia Benavides, his siblings; Roy, Armando, Chris, Raymond, Joe “Tramp”, Annie, and Patsy.
Gilbert was born on Halloween in 1948, he was born and raised in East Austin. He loved sharing his birthday with Halloween because it tickled him that all the little kids celebrated his birthday with him, and of course he knew his grandbabies would be more than willing to share their Halloween loot with Popo! He was an avid sports fan who loved boxing, the Spurs, Rangers, Longhorns and especially his Cowboys. He never met a stranger or enemy and was notorious for becoming fast friends with neighbors, nurses, and even convenience store clerks. Gilbert enjoyed crossword puzzles, tinkering with watches, and teaching his children and grandchildren how to play chess. Most recently he enjoyed spending his time painting crosses as personalized gifts for his family and friends.
God’s newest angel Gilbert will be missed beyond measure and will forever and always be remembered as the Greatest Grandpa EVER!
Honored Pallbearers will be Jimmy Ojeda, Gilbert Anthony Benavides, Phillip Benavides, Ray Padilla, Isaiah Ojeda, and Xavier Ojeda.
