Obituary of Irene Cavazos

Please share a memory of Irene to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.

Our beloved Irene Cavazos was called to our Heavenly Father on Wednesday, January 20, 2021. She was proceded in death by her parents, Tomas and Jovita Cavazos; brothers, Robert Cavazos, Tomas Cavazos, Jr., and Joe Cavazos, Sr.; and by her daughter-in-law, Mary Lina Rangel-Castro.

Irene is survived by her son, Edward Castro, Jr.; grandson, Edward Alexander Castro; sister, Betty Cavazos Benavides and husband, Richard; her brothers, Pete Cavazos and Joe Cavazos, Jr.; her nephews, Mike Cavazos, Rene Sandoval, Robert Cavazos, Randy Cavazos, Tomas Cavazos, and Mark Anthony Cavazos, Jr.; and by her nieces, Lauren Cavazos and Samantha Cavazos.

Irene retired from the Travis County Community Supervision and Corrections Department several years ago. If you had asked anyone at Travis County about Irene, oh, for sure they would have known her. People always remembered having good memories of this crazy girl to share...by crazy, meaning a funny crazy, she always made them laugh. After retirement, she took some time off and did some traveling, which was one of her passions. Several years back, she took an awesome trip to Hawaii, where she and her great friend, Barbara, stayed for almost two months. We wondered if she would ever come back to Austin.

She then thought about getting a part time job to keep her occupied, and earn some extra spending money. So, in 2006, she went looking near her familiar downtown area, where, right next door ro the Travis County Courthouse, she found at 'Around the Clock Bail Bonds'. Again, everyone there knew her. The staff enjoyed having Irene work there, not just for her keen knowledge, but for taking her famous breakfast tacos to her "boys" at the office almost every day. As I mentioned earlier, her knowledge of the system there was keen. This enabled her to be such a great help to so many. She fully retired from the bail bond office in the summer of 2020.

One thing that is for sure, is that Irene was not an introvert. She was a very strong person through and through, from her character to her personality to her presence. She loved striking up conversations, not just with her friends and family, but with total strangers. It was easy for her to make friends everywhere she went.

Irene cherished her son, Edward, and all her family. She always looked out for them. We have so many wonderful memories of Irene. We were all like family to her. She was an awesome cook, and her year round hospitality was always a welcomed gesture. For years, she was always cooking and inviting friends and family over...and not just for the holidays.

Irene, we were not prepared to lose you this soon. You still had so much to finish in life, and you had always talked about how much more travel you wanted to do. You loved the mountains and you always said the beach was a peaceful time for you, where you could enjoy the sounds of the waves with your friends.

I know Irene would like for us to remember her and all the laughs we shared, in good times and sad. Even though Irene will be missed by so many, she is still here with us, very strongly in spirit.
