My most sincere condolences to Leslie and the Hernandez family. I knew Pablo for many years and always admired and respected him. My hope is that his spirit for social and justice change for our most vulnerable people for which Pablo championed will continue in the hearts of generations to come. Go forward with peaceful protest.

On behalf of the Mokarzel family of East Austin, our sincerest condolences. I was raised in East Austin and personally saw first hand how Paul Hernandez was attacked and beaten by police for exercising his right to free speech and for advocating against the Town Lake Boat Races. Often, change only comes with a price, and he paid the price over and over. I always believed his intent was pure. May he rest in peace. East Austin lost a sincere advocate.

Dad,
I wish I would have known you before you got sick, I wish I would have known you before you remarried, nevertheless I am happy and proud to even have known you at all. I was so nervous upon meeting you for the first when I wanted to date your daughter and I couldn't help but expect rejection but you approved my relationship with her and I couldn’t have been more happy.
I always enjoyed the talks and time we had even though it wasn’t very many. I wish we could have had more time so the kids could have gotten to know you and spend more time with you. I am proud for my kids to have had a grandfather like you and one day we will share your accomplishments with them.
I am sadden to see you go, you are no longer a phone call away, I love you and will miss you very much.

What can I say Paul, I know that you’re in peace, pero la lucha siga y aye vamos todos los lluchadores viejos detrás de ti. You were a force in the barrio, many didn’t approve your methods, but there were many that had you’re back. I can now reflect on the difference that you’ve made. I smile and my heart cries tears for what systemic racism has done to our barrio, our raza. It’s upsetting, but we’ve passed the torch to our young generation. Paul, the day you were sitting on a car on Calle 7, protesting by yourself, I stopped and both sat there and shouted out ViVA LA CAUSA, jiole, we got honks and the the finger too! “ we just laugh and you said this is how much they love me, actually the can’t stand me” Paul I offer my condolences to your wife, your precious children, your familia and your closest amigos that stood by you. Y LA LUCHA us alive and going fuerte. Saludos a los hermanos del barrio en la eternidad. Peace María Elena M Rodríguez

The memory I have of Mr. Hernandez was when his daughter Veronica introduced me to him. I remember how nice he was, quiet and kind. I am blessed to have met him and been friends with Veronica for so many years. As I was talking to Veronica about her dad the past few days, I shared with her how much she was like her father. They were very much kindred spirits, working together for the same causes. Veronica and her siblings have this amazing person they loved and they shared with so many people. Mr. Hernandez was a blessing and I am privileged to have met him. May the hole his passing has left in the hearts of all who loved him be filled with the love and memories they shared with him.

Paul was a Leader. A Visionary. A Bulldog.
I will always remember and admire his taking on of the power elites on behalf of those being run over. And it was always clear that he loved Leslie so very much.
A good man. A decent man. A loving man.
I am a better human being from knowing Paul, and grateful for his and Leslie’s friendship.
Rest In Peace & Power Paul.

I was a newcomer to Austin in the summer of '83 and with my husband, Rev. Bob Breihan, and others, served as a marshall at the Klan parade where Paul and others were beaten. Whenever we saw Paul or he was in the news, Bob would explain to his Yankee wife how important Paul's efforts were in community organizing, housing and fair employment. Bob, a champion of justice himself, counted Paul as a real hero of the upcoming generation. The ongoing story of his life is a real triumph of commitment and faith. Bob is gone now also but I am proud to make a contribution to Lulac to honor the efforts of Paul and so many others to bring respect and equity to our community.

Paul took a stand for the people against the powers that be - over & over. A true disrupter in the public interest. He is embedded in the history of our city. And the devotion between Paul & Leslie was complete & lovely.

My encounters with Paul during the past thirty plus years were few and infrequent, but each time I sensed the same intense dedication to the fight for justice and equality that he had the day I met him. Even as his physical health declined, his spirit remained indomitable. His work and sacrifices helped create changes that improved the lives of people in his beloved East Austin. My sincere condolences to his family and all who knew and loved him.
