Obituary of Charles Sparks Rees

Our beloved Charles Sparks Rees, age 78, of Austin, Texas, went to God’s loving arms on Monday, August 12, 2019.

Born on November 21, 1940 in Dallas, Texas, Charles grew up in Baton Rouge, Louisiana, got a B.A. at Louisiana State University, and a PhD in Mathematics at the University of Kansas.

Dr. Rees was a professor of math for 40 years — 39 at the University of New Orleans and 1 at the University of Auckland (New Zealand). He was a generous, devoted, loving, and kind husband, father, friend, and most especially, grandfather! He loved playing golf, reading, cooking, and watching LSU football. He also enjoyed traveling with his family, solving puzzles, classical music, playing with his 9 grandchildren, and the family’s annual beach trip to Gulf Shores, Alabama. 

He was preceded in death by his parents, Paul Klein Rees and Mary Elizabeth Boone Rees, and his brother, Paul Boone Rees.

He is survived by his loving wife of 57 years, Janice Johnson Rees; daughter and son-in-law, JoBeth and Jim Kee-Rees; daughter and son-in-law, Jennifer and David Druckenmiller; and son and daughter-in-law, John and Ellen Rees; grandchildren: Sophia Kee-Rees, Luke Kee-Rees, Hope Druckenmiller, Anna Druckenmiller, Drew Druckenmiller, Naomi Rees, Isaiah Rees, Will Rees, and Joshua Rees; mother-in-law, Reberta Johnson; sister-in-law, Ruth Rees; as well as numerous loving family and friends.

Visitation will be held Saturday, August 17, 2019 from 11:00 a.m. – 12:45 p.m. with funeral services beginning at 1:00 p.m. at Redeemer Presbyterian Church located at 2111 Alexander Avenue, Austin, TX 78722. Interment will follow at Live Oak Cemetery, 10739 Twin Creeks Road, Manchaca, TX 78652.

In lieu of flowers, the family suggests to send memorial contributions to City School’s Student Scholarship Fund and designate “In Memory of Charles Rees” in the message box.
