I am truly sorry for the loss of dear Miles. I pray that you may find comfort in God's loving words at Isaiah 41:10 and rely on him to carry you through each day and continue to cherish your wonderful memories.

I met Andy in the early 90's doing residential remodel construction. Taking advantage of his math skills, he was our cut-man. We gave him the nickname Chopsaw, but it didn't stick, because he wasn't a chopsaw, he was much more subtle than that. We continued working together in the film business and spent a lot of time talking about politics and punk rock. He'd bring me home brew beer sometimes. When I heard of his passing, I'd just started building a tunnel system for a tv show with multiple compound curves. 75% of everything I know about such things I owe to Andy. I'm glad I recently got to work in Austin with him. He was an acerbic, brilliant, funny guy. Condolences to y'all.

I’ve been struggling with this all week, all the more because I’ve been meaning to reconnect with Andy for more than a decade. I knew Andy best through our shared activism and adventures/misadventures of our broad but still tight friendship group in the 90s.
He was funny with a tendency toward puns and political “dad” jokes (we co-founded a satirical but officially sanctioned club at UT called the Progressive Gun Club with a tongue in cheek but menacing mission statement). Both of us became rank and file union members (he in IATSE) roughly around the same time. We camped, rode bikes, brewed beer together, and generally enjoyed life in an easier period of Austin.
There’s so much more but it comes out in dribbles of memory. We lost someone close—before their time—and it hurts. Conferences to your family and our friends.

I met Andy in about 1986 at UT, and we’ve been friends since then. I have so many memories of him from Austin, from San Francisco where he would occasionally just ring my doorbell out of the blue, having arrived without forewarning, and from the Pacific NW where I live now. We camped and hiked and rafted and skinny dipped and brewed beer and sat around just talking for many, many hours together. He was the kind of friend you could just see for the first time in months or years, and sit down like you’d never missed a beat. And his puns were outstanding—a sign of true intelligence.
Andy, I’m sorry we didn’t get to have that dinner in April when I made that stealth visit to Austin to take care of my mom. I won’t make it to Austin this Saturday, but know that there’s a group of us who are raising a glass to you here in Portland. Sending a bear hug your way now.

Andy was a good friend and a wonderful human being. Since I haven't been in the loop (MoPac or any other) around Austin for some time now, many years have passed since I felt the warmth of his soul but I will always hold his memory. Andy had a way to let you know that he cared about you- Please watch over us, Andy (Miles? Who knew?). Help the Earth that you worked so hard for and help us however you can. Comfort to your Mom and family.
