Raymond A. Vasquez Sr., age 77, of Austin, Texas was called to his heavenly father on Monday February 4, 2002, after a courageous battle with cancer. Raymond was born on April 26, 1924 to John Vasquez and Adela Aguirre Trevino in Nixon, Texas. Raymond was a long time resident of Gonzales, Texas where he met the love of his life, Dolores Barrera. They met in 1939, and married November 12, 1942. In 1943, Raymond went to serve his country in the U.S. Army during WWII, where he achieved many honors. Upon his return to his wife in 1946, he was greeted by his first son, Raymond Jr., who was already a toddler. In 1955, the family of 6 moved to Austin to seek new opportunities. Raymond was employed several years with the Local Union 520, Brotherhood of Electrical Workers. Raymond was a hard, dedicated worker, loved his jobs and provided much to his family and others. He retired to spend more time with his family, and enjoyed his hobby of woodworking for many years. Raymond dedicated his life to God, the Church, and helping others. He never declined to assist anyone in need. He was an active leader of the Rosary Crusade, and lead orator of prayer meetings at St. Julia Catholic Church. He was member of the Diocese of Austin and a great leader to us all. To many he was the next best thing to God. His parents, brother Frank Trevino, sister Emily Castellon, and his mother and father-in-law precede him in death. He is survived by his wife of 59 years, Dolores Barrera Vasquez, sister Delia Romero and husband Pete of California, brother Ruben Trevino and wife Ofelia of Yoakum, Texas, sons, Raymond Jr. and wife Mary, Rudy and wife Rosa, Richard, and daughter Rita V. Guerra and husband John Guerra Jr., and numerous nieces, and nephews, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren. Serving as Pallbearers are Raymond S. Vasquez III, John Vasquez, Gilbert Machuca Jr., Chris Machuca, Rudy D. Vasquez Jr., and Casey Gonzales. Honarary Pallbearers are Michael Mancilla, John Vasquez Jr., and Casey Alan Gonzales. Raymond will be missed by us all, and his everlasting love can never be replaced. He was loved by many and loved many in return. The family would like to thank Msgr. Lonnie Reyes, the Limon Family, Lone Star Hospice, and Seton Medical Staff for all their dedication, support and prayers. Visitation will begin on Wednesday February 6, 2002 after 12:00 Noon with a Rosary to be recited that evening at 7:00 P.M. in Mission Funeral Home Chapel. A Mass of Christian Burial will be conducted on Thursday February 7, 2002 at 1:00 P.M. at St. Julia Catholic Church. Burial immediately to follow at Assumption Cemetery. In Lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the Raymond A. Vasquez Sr. memorial fund at St. Julia Catholic Church.
