Obituary of Amelia "Molly" Resas

Our Beloved Amelia “Molly” Resas, age 104, of Austin, Texas was called by our Heavenly Father on Tuesday, March 12, 2019.

Our Blessed Mother, the ever Virgin Mary, the Mother of God, has appeared in, many parts of the World and at each location she calls herself a different name. In Mexico, she is called, La Virgin de Guadalupe. On December 12, 1531, on the barren hill called Tepeyac, she appeared before Juan Diego and identified herself as the Ever Virgin Holy Mary, Mother of the True God from whom we live, of the Creator of All Things, Lord of Heaven and earth. There on Teypeyac she performed the miracle of the roses, the sign the Bishop had requested from Juan Diego before he would consider building a church.

Before San Jose was an established church in South Austin, families of this community would attend other churches for worship. It was the founding years (1947) that a new young priest Father Alfredo Mendez embraced the community and Mrs. Amelia Resas, the founder of the Sociedad de Las Guadalupans. Mrs. Resas “Mrs. Mollie”, as she is loving known to many of us, is a lifelong resident of south Austin and San Jose.

Recounting her history of the Sociedad de Las Guadalupans, Mrs. Resas remembers Father Mendez’ goal to have a church built in South Austin, the original San Jose at the corner of South 3^rd Street and West Mary Street. Just as Juan Diego responded to the Blessed Virgin Mary’s request for a church to be built at the Tepeyac, Mrs.Resas embraced Father Mendez’ help from the community to raise funds for the new church. She and the ladies of the church community began having “reunions” today known as our annual “Jamaica”, a daylong of family-oriented activities and fellowship, to raise funds for the new church. With blessings from Father Mendez, Mrs. Resas invited ladies of the new parish to join, and there began a new relationship with the Blessed Mother.

Like our Blessed Mother who embraced Juan Diego with her love and encouragement, Mrs. Resas and the organization embraced the Priests, providing them with the same motherly love that they had for their own families. Mrs. Resas’s recounts how they would provide meals for the young parish priests welcoming them into their homes. Today, as it was then, the organization is a support for the parish priest and the needs of the church in devotion to the Blessed Mother.

Mrs. Resas has faithfully served San Jose and the Community during her lifetime, relinquishing her Guadalupana leadership rolls to the current officers who strive to continue in the tradition set before them. Mrs. Resas is a spiritual and devoted Guadalupana, living and caring for all; respectfully the epitome of the Christian Model for Christian Women of today.

She was preceded in death by her beloved husband 43 years Jesse Resas; her parents Trinidad and Jesusa Alvarez; and her siblings Trinidad Alvarez Jr., Jesus Alvarez, Amador Alvarez, Ernest Alvarez, Louis Alvarez, Sara Jimenez, Elisa Acosta, and Vera Sanchez.

She is survived by her daughter and son-in-law Mary Jo and Frank Adame; hhjgrandchildren James F. Adame (Marisol), Aaron J. Adame (Amanda), and Candice M. Adame Estrada (Ace Estrada); great grandchildren Alejandro Adame, Mariella Adame, Ian Adame, Noah Adame, Sophia Adame, Izabella Estrada and Gabriel Estrada; and numerous other loving family and friends.

Visitation will be held from 5:00 p.m. – 9:00 p.m. with Recitation of the Holy Rosary beginning at 6:00 p.m. on Sunday, March 17, 2019 at Mission Funeral Home – South located at 6204 South First Street; Austin, Texas 78745. Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 1:00 p.m. on Monday, March 18, 2019 at San Jose Catholic. Interment will follow at Assumption Cemetery.
