Obituary of Roel Rolando Escobar
Our Beloved Roel Rolando Escobar, age 81, of Austin, Texas, was called by our Heavenly Father on January 27, 2019.
He is preceded in death by his parents, Santos and Paula Escobar; siblings, Maria Velia Escobar, Raquel E. Garza (Genaro), and Rodolfo U. Escobar.
He is survived by his loving wife of 55 years, Delia Escobar; children, Rolando Escobar (Dana) and Eric Escobar (Christine); grandchildren, Michaelyne Long (Cody), Maricela Dockery (Joseph), Christopher Escobar, Cayden Escobar, Christian Escobar, and Austin Escobar; great grandchildren, Noah Long, Brooklyn Morgan, Madilyn Long, Jordynn Dockery, and Jianna Dockery. Roel is also survived by his sister, Norma Contreras (Felix) and sister-in-law, Evangelina Escobar.
Roel “Roy” Escobar was born in 1938 in the South Texas town of Escobares. Roy moved to Austin in 1963 where he began his 45-year career with Academy Surplus. During his time at Academy, Roy made many acquaintances and knew no strangers; he was often referred to as “Mr. Academy”. Roy lived a faith filled life as a parishioner of St. Ignatius Martyr Catholic Church. Known to many as "Popo", Roy had great pride in his grandchildren and great-grandchildren. In addition to his love for family and friends - Roy enjoyed music and dancing as well as spending time outdoors with his garden plants and flowers.
Visitation will begin at 5:00 p.m., Thursday, January 31, 2019 with a Recitation of the Holy Rosary beginning at 7:00 p.m., Mission Funeral Home - South Side, 6204 S. First St., Austin, Texas. Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10:00 a.m. on Friday, February 1, 2019 at St. Ignatius Catholic Church, 126 W Oltorf St, Austin, TX 78704. Interment will follow at Onion Creek Cemetery.
