Obituary of Maria Lourdes Flandes Salinas
Our Beloved Maria Lourdes Flandes Salinas, age 81, of Austin, Texas, was called by our Heavenly Father on Thursday, June 7, 2018.
Courageous and determined, Maria inspired all those around her to become their best self-person. Her lifelong calling was to educate individuals and empower community with promise. A community educator/activist/elder, she molded art and culture in Austin with the AZTLAN Dance Company that she founded in 1974, and modeled family and community building with Little Folks Bilingual Child Development Center that she founded in 1983. Nurturing a bright future for tomorrow she has been recognized and honored by numerous awards, notably the ESB-Mexican American Cultural Center for Lifetime Achievement in the Arts (2012), the Austin Critics Table Awards – Austin Arts Hall of Fame (2010), and the Texas Good Neighbor Award (1979), among others.
She was preceded in death by her husband of 40 years Jesus Salvador Salinas and her parents Arturo Flandes and Dominga Garza Flandes.
She is survived by her beloved children Nora Salinas Johnson (Danny), Nelda Salinas Frasier (Dan), Roen Salinas Sr. (Holli Hulett), and Ruben Salinas; close family friend Elia Loredo; sister Graciela Trevino (Rey); grandchildren Roen Salinas Jr. (Lucia), Ryan Salinas (Miriam), Britney Frasier, and Justin Frasier; great grandchildren Roen Salinas III, Nathaniel Salinas, Jesus Salinas, and Emylia Salinas; and numerous other loving friends and relatives.
Visitation will be held from 5:00 – 9:00 p.m. with Recitation of the Holy Rosary beginning at 7:00 p.m. on Monday June 11, 2018 at Mission Funeral Home – South Side, 6204 South First Street; Austin, Texas 78745. Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Tuesday June 12, 2018 at St. Albert the Great Catholic Church. Interment will follow at Assumption Cemetery.
