Obituary of Jose Francisco Ramirez
Jose “Jody” Ramirez, 66, died peacefully on March 29, 2018 at his home in
Austin, Texas, surrounded by his beloved family.
He was born on January 9, 1952 in Amarillo, Texas, to Joe G. Ramirez and
Georgia Sandoval. He was the third of six children and was raised in Odessa, Texas. In
1970, he graduated from Permian High School and married his high school sweetheart,
Mary Carrasco. He joined the United States Air Force in 1972. Jody was a medic in the
Air Force and completed his medical imaging training while in the service. During his
time in the Air Force, Jody served at various posts including Wilford Hall in San Antonio
and Lakenheath Air Force Base in England. He was honorably discharged in 1978,
having attained the rank of Staff Sergeant. After the Air Force, Jody attended Southwest
Texas State University where he studied Commercial Art. He and his family moved to
Austin, Texas in 1981. For the last 19 years, Jody worked at Texas Orthopedics as an X-
ray and MRI tech.
Jody loved music, and he loved to make people smile. Aside from his family,
nothing brought more joy to him than playing music. He was a self-taught guitarist and
vocalist with a knack for memorizing hundreds of song lyrics. Jody performed with his
musical group “The Side Bar Band” at various venues and occasions. For the last 10
years, he looked forward to the yearly “Spring Fling” celebration held at his home in
Austin, where music, food, and great company made for a wonderful time.
Jody is preceded in death by his father, Joe G. Ramirez, mother Georgia S.
Salinas, step-father Mario Salinas, and sisters Lupita and Marissa Ramirez. He is
survived by his children Angelica Ramirez, Nicole Pettit, Anthony Ramirez and his love
Catherine Aleman; his siblings Josie Boncek and husband John Boncek, Ricardo
Ramirez, Judy Ramirez, Cindy Ramirez, John Joe Ramirez, Eli Ramirez, and Mary
Garcia and husband Brian Garcia; his beloved companion Robin McLaurin; 7
grandchildren; and many aunts, uncles and cousins.
There will be rosary for Jody on Thursday, April 5 at 8:00 p.m., and a Catholic mass at St.
Paul’s Catholic church on Friday, April 6 at 10:00 a.m. The family will have a memorial
celebration of his life at a later date.
The family would like to extend their special thanks to the doctors and staff at
Texas Orthopedics, who not only provided ongoing support to Jody throughout his
illness, but who also arranged a memorable and fun-filled weekend for the family at Lost
Pines Resort in Cedar Creek, Texas. The kindness and generosity extended to our
family during the past year will always be remembered and appreciated.
