Obituary of Ishmael Treviño González

Our Beloved Sir Knight Ishmael Treviño González (KB5AVB), age 75, of Austin was called home by our Heavenly Father on Tuesday, January 9, 2018.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Ismael and Cesaria González, and his brothers Ray and Ruben González.

He is survived by his devoted wife of 54 years, Terri Olvera González; children Audrey Christine (Amir) Mahboubi, Christopher (Elizabeth) González and Christian R. (Jodi) González; grandsons Eric Indiana, Michael, Matthew (godson) and Julian González; granddaughter Ashley Beranek; sisters Alice G. Garcia and Delia (Joe) Garza; and numerous nieces, nephews, other loving family and friends.

He was born in San Antonio on December 9, 1942. His father played bass in Don Santiago Jimenez’s band “Sus Valedores.” Raised in Austin, he lettered in track and played the snare and bass drums in the marching band at Johnston High School, where he graduated in January 1963. He married his high school sweetheart, Terri, in November 1963.

At 14, he worked at Matt’s El Rancho as dishwasher and worked his way to wait staff trainer. He worked at Glastron Boat Co. where he helped build the Batboat for the Adam West “Batman” television series. He retired from Artcarved, where he worked on class rings and championship rings for the Dallas Cowboys and Texas Longhorns football – his favorite teams.

He joined the Knights of Columbus at St. Julia Catholic Church with the assistance of his father-in-law, Grand Knight Reyes Olvera. He was a charter member and Third Degree member of the Knights of Columbus Council 10209 at St. Paul Catholic Church. Terri and Ishmael were founding members of St. Paul in 1989. He was a member of the Bishop Reicher Fourth Degree Assembly 1099. He made his Fourth Degree side-by-side with his son Christian in 1992, in the town of Columbus in the 500^th anniversary of Columbus’s journey. In 2002, he sponsored his son-in-law, Amir, at his Fourth Degree ceremony. He was always very involved in church life at his parishes of St. Julia, Dolores, St. Catherine of Siena and St. Paul. He served as a lector and extraordinary minister of holy Communion and played guitar in church choirs. He was a part of the prayer group at Dolores where he also played bass in the Catholic rock band Genesis II.

He became a CB operator in the 1970s under the handle of “The Blue Crusader” (KLZ2172), a reference to his blue VW bug and his Catholic faith. Rising early each morning, he would read the Gospel on Channel 13 to anyone who would listen. He later became a licensed HAM radio operator under the rank of General as KB5AVB and made friends and contacts around the world, on every continent.

With music in his blood, he became an accomplished guitar player who taught many people to play. He taught his sons drums and guitar. Being able to play by ear, he could play along with his favorite artists, such as Johnny Cash, Roger Miller, Chet Akins and Les Paul. He enjoyed playing guitar at church, for his grandsons and especially serenading his wife.

He was a hard-working family man who made every sacrifice to give his wife and children the best life he could. He was proud of all the accomplishments of his children and their spouses.  He was proud he was able to provide his children with the gift of higher education, including at the University of Texas, where he was a football season ticket holder.

Visitation will be held from 2 to 6 p.m. with vigil and rosary at 4 p.m. Sunday, January 14, at Mission Funeral Home. Funeral Mass is 11 a.m. Monday, January 15, 2018, at St. Paul Catholic Church. This will conclude services.
