Our beloved Lucia Gamez Mercado, age 91, resident of Austin was called by our Heavenly Father on Wednesday, June 6, 2001, at home surrounded by family, friends and neighbors.She was preceded in death by her beloved husband Cresenio Mercado, her beloved parents Santiago and Emma Hicks Gamez, Sons, Daniel Mercado and Eduardo Mercado in infancy, and most recently a grandson Ronald Mercado, great-granddaughter Tanya Reyanne Mercado, Sister Sara Gamez Mercado, her 4 brothers and 3 sisters. Born in Manor Texas on July 24, 1909, married Cresencio Mercado and moved to Austin. Widowed at a young age with five children to raise, she was a loving Mother and firmed with her children, often saying ?I?m only one parent and I have to point you in the right direction and follow it to your destiny?. Lucia was proud of the work she had done in raising her children. A friend to all, everyone was welcomed at her house, her love and friendship extended past friends including their children and grandchildren. A happy person, she enlightened the atmosphere with her presence especially at family gatherings. She was not one to judge, she accepted people for what they were. A faithful member of her church Our Lady of Guadalupe Catholic Church, who was her personal patron Saint. Survivors include: Beloved children, Marie M. Bargas, Rose M. Arriaga, Cray Mercado all of Austin and Robert G. Mercado of Visalia, California. She is also survived by 27 Grandchildren, 39 Great-Grandchildren and 21 Great-Great-Grandchildren. Recitation of rosary Friday, 7:30pm at Our Lady of Guadalupe Catholic Church. Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated Saturday 10:00am at Our Lady of Guadalupe Catholic Church. Rev. Fr. William Elliott OMI will officiate. Interment will follow in Santa Maria Cemetery in Pflugerville, Texas. Serving as pallbearers are Daniel J. Mercado, Alex Mercado, Rodney Mercado, Robert Bargas, Ernest Arriaga and Vincent Arriaga.
