Obituary of Daisy Mettlach-Holderfield
Please share a memory of Daisy to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.
Heaven gained another home run hitter on March 6, 2017. Daisy Mettlach-Holderfield passed away at Hospice Austin’s Christopher House with her husband and mother by her side.
Daisy was born in Edinburg, Texas on February 14, 1982. She was preceded in death by her grandfather, Frank Niemietz, and her aunt, Priscilla Mullen.
She is survived by her husband Scott Holderfield of Austin, Texas, her stepdaughter Mikayla Holderfield also of Austin, her mother and stepfather, Phyliss and Dan Hobson of San Antonio, her grandmother Jean Niemietz of Hallettsville, TX, her mother-in-law and father-in-law Shirley and Millard Holderfield of New Braunfels, Texas, her brother-in-law Mark Holderfield of Houston and many aunts, uncles, cousins, and friends who loved Daisy dearly.
Daisy grew up in McAllen, Texas and lived there through her elementary school years. She spent this time enjoying the company of her cousins while jumping on the trampoline, eating grilled cheese sandwiches and mac n’ cheese, hanging out playing video games, and keeping themselves busy outside. She was the apple of her grandparents’ eyes and spent a lot of time with them on the back porch or in their garage. It was during these younger years that she began to love softball and participated in little league baseball.
Daisy and her mother moved to Kerrville in December of 1993 where Daisy continued her passion for softball and other sports such as soccer, volleyball, and track. She was a star athlete at Tivy High School and graduated in 2000. She made many lifelong friends in Kerrville, and said she was always glad they moved there. She was a proud Tivy Antler and lived the motto that Tivy Fight Never Dies.
After high school, Daisy played softball for the University of Missouri from 2000-2003. She graduated from Mizzou in 2004 with a degree in hotel and restaurant management. She had many close friends from her team of lady Tigers and often talked of their fun memories. With a year of eligibility left to play, Daisy went to California and played ball for Santa Clara in 2005 where she had an exceptional season and was named Bronco of the Year by her teammates.
Daisy returned to Texas in 2006 and made her home in Austin. It wasn’t long before she met her husband, Scott. She found her dream job as a fitness trainer with Kelly Personal Training. She truly loved this job and put an enormous effort into building strong relationships with her coworkers and clients. She held all of them in the highest regard and never once dreaded going to work. She read and studied continuously to make herself a better trainer and walked the talk with her fitness and nutrition. She also remained an avid softball player up until her recent fight with metastatic melanoma. The friends she made in Austin through work and play added to her list of remarkable friends that meant so much to her.
Even though Daisy was busy with work and softball, she still made time for her family. The most memorable times were the Thanksgivings spent together enjoying each other’s company, eating great food, and competing on the volleyball court. She could bring out the competitive nature in everyone - even the spectators on the sidelines.
When not playing ball herself, Daisy enjoyed watching sports at home with Scott. She always rooted for the Astros and Scott loves the Cubs. She did admit that she was thrilled to see Scott’s Cubs win the World Series and would always remember how excited he was.
Daisy’s family will not ever be able to properly thank all of those involved in supporting and helping us through Daisy’s illness. Your love and graciousness made us feel overwhelmingly blessed beyond words. We thank God for each and every one of you.
