Our beloved John Gumfory, Jr., age 89, resident of Austin, Texas, was called home on Friday, February 24, 2017. He was preceded in death by his wife of 62 years, Hildegard Gumfory; his daughter, Heidemarie Gumfory; his parents, Lela and John Gumfory, Sr.; and siblings, Roberta Hutton, Janet Mueller, Juanita Maple, Robert, Charles, J.M. "Bud", Duane and Leland "Bon" Gumfory. Mr. Gumfory is survived by his loving children, Johnnie Wells, John W. Gumfory, and Chyrl Brummett; his siblings, LeRoy "Lee" Gumfory of Iola, Kansas, and Onella Valentine of Neosho Falls, Kansas; his precious grandchildren, Beau Wells, Crystal Gayle Mathes, John C. Gumfory, Julie Hattabaugh, Daniel Brummett, and David Brummett; and by eleven great-grandchildren, and two great great-grandchildren. John Gumfory was born April 12, 1927, in Gas City, Kansas, the sixth child of eleven siblings. A sailor, soldier, gardener, fisherman, and entrepreneur, he left Kansas to serve in the US Navy during WWII. He participated in amphibious landings at Pelilu, Iwo Jima and Okinawa, on a landing craft in the Pacific theater. After the war John transitioned to a civilian career, but felt he needed to enlist in the Army to provide for his family. His career was spent mostly in West Germany and Ft. Hood, Texas. After serving his country for twenty one years, he retired from the military. Mr Gumfory continued providing for his family by raising vegetables in the back yard garden, as well as chickens and rabbits, and fish from local waterways, all of which made for wonderful family meals. He created Tomato Growers, Inc., which became known as TomGro, Inc. The business was located on Montopolis Drive. In the 60s and 70s, the family raised tomatoes in greenhouses and sold them to grocery stores in Austin. Eventually, Mr. Gumfory built the TomGro grocery store, which served the east Austin community for years. He added the Double G Liquor store chain to the family businesses, and also the American Angler Tackle and Hobby store before retiring in 1996. Throughout the years, he loved fishing with his friends and family. His four children grew up working in the family businesses, and are proud of what their father and mother accomplished. Honorary pallbearers will be John W. Gumfory, John C. Gumfory, Daniel Brummett, David Brumment, Don Brummett, Beau Wells, Brandon Gumfory and Lane Wells.
