Obituary of Rosemary Sone Boland
Please share a memory of Rosemary to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.
Rosemary Sone Boland, age 83, died on Thursday, December 22, 2016, the result of an embolism. She was preceded in death by her husband of 35 years, Jim Sherman; her brother, Robert Sone, and her parents, Robert and Violet Sone.
Born in Sweetwater, Texas on February 8, 1933, Rosemary moved with her family while still an infant to Rockport, Texas, and a few years later to Corpus Christi. There she picked up the game of tennis, which became one of the great joys of her life and the connection to many of her dearest friends. While attending Corpus Christi High School, she became state doubles champ with her partner Doris Mason.
Rosemary graduated from the University of Texas at Austin, then moved back to Corpus Christi to begin her career as a history teacher. Tennis was always part of her life, and she coached in addition to teaching. She was a lifetime learner, earning her master’s degree over several summers and eventually becoming a librarian. That position allowed her to celebrate one of the other loves of her life, reading. When she retired from CCISD, she was the librarian at W.B. Ray High School.
Rosemary met her husband Jim Sherman in Corpus Christi, and they were married in 1956, a happy union that lasted until Jim’s death in 1991. Family life was an adventure that included long road trips, camping, tennis tournaments, sailing, and great times at the beach and out in the hill country. When family friends joined in, the fun was multiplied, and Rosemary was a true friend who was loved by many. For her entire life, Rosemary was an unfailing advocate for her daughter Susan, who has special needs.
She met her second husband, Jim Boland, in Corpus Christi and they married in 1997, making their home in Corpus Christi and then spending several happy years living near Camp Wood in the Texas hill country. Rosemary loved hosting friends and family there, and was active as a volunteer at the Camp Wood Public Library. Her friends at Barksdale United Methodist Church and in bridge groups were highlights for her. Rosemary and Jim moved to Austin in 2014 to be closer to family.
Rosemary is survived by her loving husband of 20 years, Jim "JR" Boland; her children, Susan Sherman and Laura Sherman; the children of her husband, Richard Boland and his fiancé, Tina Yates, Jeanette Zepeda and her husband, Danny, and Mark Boland; her grandchildren, Leah Sherman-Weiner, Aria Sherman-Weiner, Brandon Stanley, Andrew Welch, Chrissy Zepeda, Destiny Boland, and Nichole Brooks and her husband, Randy; great-grandchildren, Hailey Hankins, Taylor Milstead, D.J. Carrasco, and Ty Brooks; her nephew, John Sone and his wife, Linda Haddock; her great nieces and nephew, Stephanie Dixson and her husband, A’Doriyun, Jeff Sone and his wife, Crystal, and Diana “Sunny” Sone; and numerous other family members and friends, many of whom were like family.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that a donation be made in honor of Rosemary to the Camp Wood Public Library, Meals on Wheels, or the charity of your choice.
The family would like to greet friends at an open house from 3:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. on Saturday, January 7th at 2510 Stoutwood Circle in Austin. A memorial service will be held at 3:00 p.m. on Sunday, January 8, 2017 at Oak Hill United Methodist Church, 7815 W. Hwy 290, Austin, Texas, 78745.
