SHARON (SHERRY) LEONARDO 1950 - 2012 Sharon (Sherry) Louise Leonardo, nee Schmelzer, age 62, died on Thursday evening, March 1, 2012 at Paradise Court Assisted Living Center, Austin, TX, after a courageous 4-year battle with cancer. Sharon was born February 22, 1950 in Columbus, OH to Raymond J. and Mary Catherine (Morris) Schmelzer (Wormley) and graduated from Bishop Watterson High School, Columbus, OH, in 1968. She served our country in the United States Marine Corp and the United States Marine Corp Reserve, cared for the youth of Grand Prairie, TX as a school cook, served an elderly friend as full-time care-giver, and until health-related retirement in 2010, served the citizens of Texas for 15 years as a state welfare case worker and Medicaid eligibility specialist.
With a beautiful smile, loving personality, gift for conversation, and a deeply rooted faith in the Lord and the Church, she made friends wherever she lived and worked. Through a simple, generous lifestyle, she found many ways to share her love of cooking, baking, crocheting, and sewing. Preceded in death by her parents, a sister, Julie, and former husband Frank Leonardo Sr, Sharon is survived by 3 brothers?John (Rika) Schmelzer of Marshfield, WI; Brother Michael Schmelzer, FSC, of Memphis, TN; and Keith Wormley of Findlay, OH; a son, Frank (special friend Alexis) Leonardo, of Austin; a daughter, Jessica Ann (Aaron) Doss, of Austin; grandchildren Jack and Ava Louise Doss, aunts, several cousins, nieces, nephews, special friend Doug Tozier, and many, many friends. She is a former member of Holy Name Parish, Columbus, OH and St. Michael Parish, Grand Prairie, TX.
Family will receive friends from 6-8 p.m. on Tuesday, March 6 at Santa Barbara Catholic Church, 13713 Fm 969, Austin, TX 78724. Rosary begins at 7 p.m. Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10 a.m. on Wednesday, March 7, with Fr. John Boiko presiding. Interment will follow at Our Lady of the Rosary Cemetery, Georgetown, TX. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Santa Barbara Catholic Church.
The family wishes to thank all those who assisted in the care of our sister, our mother, our grandmother. In a special way, we acknowledge and thank Teri, Sue, and Doug?dear friends of Sherry, the kind staff of Paradise Court Assisted Living, Hospice Austin, and the wonderful parish family of Santa Barbara Church. May the good Lord bless all of you, and may the good Lord hold Sherry tenderly in the palm of His hand.
