George G. (Petrified Rock) Walters, age 86, passed away peacefully on Monday, November 8, 2010 surrounded by his family. George was born on October 2, 1924, in Heart Butte, Montana on the Blackfeet Indian Nation Reservation.He spent his childhood in Browning, Montana. He joined the U.S. Army and proudly served during WWII, Korean and Vietnam Wars with the 10th Mountain Division and spending 12 ® years overseas. He retired as a Staff Sergeant after serving for 27 years. After the military, he moved his family to Austin where he began a second career with The University of Texas at Austin, Division of Housing and Food Service. He retired again after 15 years. George was deeply proud of his Indian Heritage as an Elder of the Blackfeet Tribe. He was affectionally known as ?Chief? by all who knew and loved him. He enjoyed traveling, attending Pow-Wows through-out MO, WY, CO, NM and OK. Chief was involved as an Elder and Advisor for Great Promise for American Indians Organization and the Austin Pow-Wow. George is survived by his Spouse of 53 years, Toshiko Walters, Sons; Glenn Walters and wife Nelda, from San Antonio, TX. and Lee Walters and wife Diane, 5 Grandchildren and 4 Great-Grandchildren. He also leaves behind numerous nieces and nephews whom he deeply loved. George is preceded in death by his parents, Arthur Walters and Louise Marceau, and Brothers; James H. Walters and Alex Walters, Sisters; Cora Walters, Lora Jamison, Alice (Topsy) Denison, Ursula Kramer and Madeline (Nellie) Baker. Recitation of the Holy Rosary will be Thursday, Nov. 11 at 7:00 p.m. at Mission Funeral Home Chapel. Funeral Mass will be Friday, Nov. 12 at 2:00 p.m. at Our Lady of Guadalupe Catholic Church, 9th St and Lydia, Co-Celebrants are Friar Munoz Villegas and Deacon Richard Duecker. Interment will be at Fort Sam Houston National Cemetery in San Antonio, TX on Tuesday, Nov. 16 at 11:30 a.m. Serving as Pallbearers are Al Mouse, Anthony Mouse, David Hoskins, Greg Garcia. Honorary Pallbearers are Alex Garcia and Andrew Garcia. The family wishes to thank all of the Doctors, Nurses and staff at Seton Medical Center for their care and compassion.
