Obituary of Jose Estrada

Jose E. ?Blood? Estrada Jose Eluterio Estrada, Sr., age 62 of Austin, passed away peacefully on August 3, 2010 surrounded by his loving family and friends.
Jose was preceded in death by his parents Eluterio Q. & Emilia M. Estrada. He is survived by his loving wife of 39® years, Lorenza; son, Jose Eluterio Estrada, Jr. and wife Sharon of Cedar Creek; daughter, Andrea E. McCullough of Austin; his sister, Mary Carmen Magallanez and her husband Gilbert of Harwood. Jose?s beloved grandchildren include, Lauren Estrada, Joseph Estrada, Haley McCullough and Connor McCullough.
Jose is also survived by his close cousins Pete and Carmen Perales and family and the late Nick and Minnie Rodriguez family, and numerous nephews, nieces, cousins, and a host of friends
Jose served in the U.S. Army 9th Infantry Division (1968-1970), served in Vietnam (1968-1969), where he earned a National Defense Service Medal, Vietnam Service Medal, Vietnam Campaign Medal w/60 DVC, Vietnamese Cross of Gallantry w/Palm Vietnamese Unit Citation Civil Actions Medal, Combat Infantryman?s Badge, Army Commendation Medal, Air Medal w/3rd OLC, Purple Heart, Bronze Star Medal w/?V? DVC, Bronze Star Medal w/2nd OLC, the Army Commendation Medal. He received his Sergeant status while serving his Country in Vietnam. His rankings also include Marksman (Rifle M-14), Expert (Rifle M-16), Second Class Gunner (Machine Gun M-60) and Two Overseas Bars.
A proud Luling and Austin resident, Jose retired from Southwestern Bell after 32 years of service. He was a member of the Communication Workers of America Local 6132 where he served as Director of Legislative Affairs.
Jose was a proud member and volunteer of the San Jose Catholic Church family. He proudly served as 2nd Vice Commander of the Catholic War Veterans Post 1805, San Jose Catholic Church Knights of Columbus, American Legion Post 0083. He was a VA volunteer in Austin.
Jose was a wonderful and devoted husband, brother, father and ?Popo.? Jose had a generous heart and was always willing to lend a helping hand by volunteering his time to those in need. Jose will be remembered as a remarkable and generous man who loved his family and church community. He made friends easily and was genuinely loved and respected by everyone who knew him, he leaves behind a wealth of memories, not the least of which is his huge capacity to love all the aspects of life. He was a lifetime Longhorn fan and an avid fisherman.
We will miss Jose?s strong loud voice, his quick comebacks, his generosity, but most of all, we will miss the overwhelming love he had for his family and all of his friends. The Estrada family would like to thank the Nursing staffs of the Intensive Care Unit, Intermediate Care Unit, and 5th Floor Unit at Seton Medical Center with special thanks to Dr. Fuller, Dr. Hayes. Dr. Weingarten, Dr. Simpao, Dr. Driscoll, Dr. Dallas, Dr. Fass, Dr. Sherrod, and Dr. Shapiro for their kindness, support, and care that was given to Jose.
Lorenza, Jose Jr., and Andrea wish to express special thanks to Mary and Gilbert Magallanez, Marcus and Juliette Jimenez, Joe Robert Perales, and Nick Rodriguez, Jr. for their undying love, devotion and support to Jose during his illness. In addition, a special thank you to all his family, relatives, and friends for their thoughtfulness, prayers, and food contributions from friends and organizations.

The Family will receive visitors beginning at 5:00 p.m. on Monday, August 9th at Mission Funeral Home-Serenity Chapel, 6204 South First St., Austin, Texas 78745. Mr. Estrada will Lie in State beginning at 9:00 a.m. Tuesday, August 10th at San Jose Catholic Church, 2435 Oak Crest Avenue, Austin, Texas 78704 with a Rosary to be recited at 10:00 a.m. Visitation will resume at Mission Funeral Home Serenity Chapel from 1:00 p.m. ? 9:00 p.m. Tuesday.
Mr. Estrada will Lie In State beginning at 9:00 a.m. Wednesday, August 11th at St. John The Evangelist Catholic Church,500 E. Travis St., Luling, Texas 78648 with a Mass to follow at 10:00 a.m. Interment will follow at Luling Community Cemetery on FM 2984 & Hackberry.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that contributions be made in Jose?s honor to the Catholic War Veterans Post 1805, 4913 South Congress Avenue, Austin, Texas 78745.
