FRENCHCarl Lewis French (Age 69) of Austin, TX, originally of Honesdale, PA, passed away Monday, March 2nd in Austin, TX. He was the son of the late Elmer and Marie French. He served in the United States Air Force from 1957 to 1961. He was stationed in Libya and the United Kingdom, became instrument certified on a USAF bomber, and was awarded the Good Conduct Medal for his service. From 1962 to 1994, he served with distinction with the Central Intelligence Agency in Liberia, Thailand, Nepal, Ethiopia, Iran, Switzerland, Brazil, Romania, and Portugal. He was one of the CIA?s original "Beach Boys;? played Embassy basketball games against President Tubman?s son in Liberia; climbed to Base Camp I on Mt. Everest; excavated fossils in Ethiopia; went on Safari in Kenya; skied the Alps in Switzerland; coached girls? softball and was on the EAB School Board in Brazil; and was awarded a medal for his work in Romania. Upon retirement, he was active in the Austin Pond Society contributing to their newsletter ?Ripples,? help found the Texas Association of Pond Societies, and was an official with the local Kiwanis of Shady Hollow. Most importantly, he met and befriended many people from around the world; he kept and cherished those friendships throughout his life. Carl is survived by his loving wife of forty-five years, Carolyn (Clark) French; two brothers, Alan French of Fairfield, TX, and John French of Bloomsburg, PA; three children, Craig French and wife Alison of Vienna, VA, Curtis French and wife Keisha of Austin, TX, and Chris French and wife Kathy of Annandale, VA; and five grandchildren, Victoria, Christina, Alexander, Logan, and Ian.
