Obituary of Lillian Moorman

Please share a memory of Lillian to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.
Lillian Carol Johnson Moorman died on January 4, 2009 in Austin, TX., at the age of 92. She was known to those who loved her as someone with spirited wit, unbreakable loyalty and charity. She loved her family, friends, and numerous pets throughout her life. Before her passing she expressed excitement towards seeing those who preceded her; her parents Per Alfred and Anna Johnson, her beloved brother Kenneth Johnson and her husband Charles A. Moorman. ?I?m going to see my family; I?m going to meet Jesus?, she said. Born on May 20, 1916 in Minneapolis, MN., the first child of two Swedish immigrants, she grew up with her younger brother, Kenny, in the house that their father designed and built himself. Following high school, she attended business college and found work during World War II with the Navy Department in Washington, D.C., where she met her husband, Charles Moorman, then a pilot in the Army Air Corps. The two lived in Minneapolis, Wichita, KS., and Casper, WY. while raising their three daughters. After Charles? death in October 1969, Lillian moved to Houston, TX. where she worked as a secretary for cardiologist Dr. Robert J. Luchi at Baylor College of Medicine. Dr. Luchi was so impressed with her secretarial skills, that a letter of reference he wrote concluded with, ?If she is interviewed by you, I suggest you lock the door behind her.? At the age of 67, she retired from civil service and moved to Austin to be close to her two elder daughters and their children. At Englewood Estates, a retirement community where she lived for over 10 years, she was known as ?the Hat lady?---an eccentric and joyful character, who played bridge, rescued cats and was a charter member of Englewood?s chapter of the Red Hat Society. In May 2006, she made her final move to her daughter and son-in-law?s house where she enjoyed having poetry read to her (a life long passion) and the company of their pets. She died in her sleep following a long terminal illness. She is survived by her three daughters; Linda Moorman Hargrove; Mary Alice and Leslie Ann Moorman; her son-in-law, Jim Hargrove; her five grandchildren Charles Hargrove and his wife Amy Willats, Claire Hargrove; Stephen P. Noah, Panika M.C. and Abraham F.M. Dillon; and her two great-grandchildren Kia Austin and Kiera Margrethe Hargrove. Special thanks to those who helped care for her at the end: devoted friend Cindy Garcia; Peggy Tinkey, RN of Robinson Creek Hospice; her granddaughter Panika; and Dr. Allen Sonstein. Memorial Services will be held: Saturday, January 24 at 2:00p.m., Shepherd of the Hills Presbyterian Church, 5226 William Cannon Dr., Austin, TX., 78749, with a reception following at the church. In lieu of flowers, the family request donations to either; Austin Humane Society(www.austinspca.com), Meals on Wheals(www.measlonwhealsandmore.org), Shepherd of the Hills Presbyterian Church(www.shpc.org). Messages to the family can be sent to lil@hargrove.org.
