Then, started her second life, volunteering with the Foster Grandparent Program in 1991 for the next 15+ years. She was lovingly known as ?Grandma Bea? by Brackenridge Hospital staff, employees, and the children on the 4th floor and their families. Grandma Bea was honored at several functions for her dedication and loving efforts in assisting families and caring for the children while assigned at Brackenridge Hospital. She was nominated by her co-workers and was awarded the KVUE?s Five Who Care Award (2005) and also became the poster grandparent for the Foster Grandparent Program. She appeared in several news articles in the Senior Advocate and other volunteer periodicals because of her enthusiasm and compassion as a senior volunteer. She continued to volunteer at the new Dell Children?s Hospital for a short period after it was completed. She traveled to many of her grandchildren?s baseball, football and cheerleading tournaments, loved to play bingo, watch Jay Leno and the Texas Longhorns play football, and enjoyed every single day of her life.
