He was preceded in death by his parents, T. H. and Jessie Rounsavall Barry; brothers Jeff, Jimmie, and Hubert Barry.
He is survived by his wife, Lorraine Freitag Barry; daughters Diannia Smith of Driftwood, TX., Jennifer Smith of Kingsland, TX., and Sherry Grennon of Austin, TX; granddaughters, Kaysa Smith of Driftwood, TX., Jessica Smith of Kingsland, TX., and Chelsea Barry of Austin, TX., and great-granddaughter Holly Jones of Driftwood, TX.
Born August 20, 1921 in Leagueville,TX. to T. H. and Jessie Rounsavall Barry, he was the eldest of four sons. After graduating from Hempstead High School in 1939, he joined the military, and was stationed in the United Kingdom during the war. On June 6, 1944 he crossed the English Channel and stormed Utah Beach as one of the first Texans to liberate Europe. Upon returning home, he married Lorraine Freitag of Monaville, TX., on December 6, 1945.
The majority of his career was spent at Bergstrom Air Force Base, where he was a Crew Chief in the 27th Strategic Fighter Wing under the 8th Air Force. Initially flying the P/F-82 "Twin Mustang" and P/F-51 "Mustang", the wing flew fighter escort operations. During the Korean War, the 27th SFW deployed to Japan. The Wing flew combat missions in Korea until June 1951 and returned to the United States. The Wing redeployed to Japan during October 1952 - February 1953 to provide air defense.
After retiring from the USAF in 1962, he worked for the USPS, and further distinguished himself as the personal mailman for President Lyndon Baines Johnson. Following the President's passing in 1973, he remained in service to Lady Bird Johnson until his retirement from the LBJ Presidential Library in 1983. Returning to Hempstead later that year, he cared for his mother, Jessie, until her death in 1989, and worked at the family store, Barry Feed & Grain, with his brother Hubert, and sister-in-law, Mildred Barry. A lifelong Democrat, he served on the City Council and later as a Waller County Commissioner from January 1, 1989 to December 31, 1996.
The family wishes to express heartfelt thanks to Dr. Duong and the staff of 3 south at South Austin Hospital. Also, Apicon home health services and Austin Hospice. The loving care given to him during his long illness and many hospital stays was a source of great comfort to the family.
Visitation will be held on Saturday, September 30, 2006 from 1:00 p.m. - 3:00 p.m. at Mission Funeral Home Serenity Chapel 6204 South First Street Austin, TX. 78745.
