On my mother's side of the family there weren't to many cousins.. that were females. They are my cousins, Yvonne (Frank) Angel (Carmelo) Tania (Tony) my sister Felicia (RIP) and myself (Jo Ann). Growing up I remember Angel was our go to during the summer. I remember we would sit outside their front yard and watch all the cars go by because they lived on a busy street. We would lay in the front yard and look up at the stars at night and from the last time I talked to her I think we brought up that one time me her and my sister were looking up and we were waiting to see shooting stars. I looked up and I said "come on Staaaaaaa's".. It was one of them moments where you had to have been there to know what I'm talking about. That's just one of many memories that I will never forget. She was there for me through many of my meltdowns, she was always just a phone call away. She was like my sister. We had so many memories growing up. I know she loved her grandbabies as much as I love mine. She was a beautiful person and I'm going to miss her so much. I'm going to miss our conversations. I'm going to miss sending freestyle music back and forth to each other. I'm going to miss your laugh. She would always tell me how much she loved my laugh. Angel reached out to me on my birthday December the 9th 2023 through Facebook Messenger. We had a few video chats here and there in between. And then I messaged her on her birthday December 25th 2023. And that was the last conversation we had. I'm jealous of the Angels. But at the same time my heart is at peace because I know she's sitting up there with my sister Felicia and my Pops Andres "Og". Until we all meet again, I love you Angel and I'm going to miss you. Primas Forever. -Talia

When I think of my cousin Angela, my mind immediately pictures her as we were when we were teenagers in the 80’s. I always loved to visit her and her family in Austin. It was only an hour away, but it always felt like another world. The stores were different, the neighborhoods seemed different, and the people were not exactly like the ones in San Antonio. It all felt a bit… edgier. Which is also how I saw my cousins. They were radical teens braving this tough town.
One particular summer stands out the most. My uncle Johnny likes telling this story, I hope he wont mind me telling it from my perspective. It was the summer of 1987: The Simpsons were born, everyone was Dirty Dancing, and we saw the first laptop.
We got to the Macias house late afternoon as everyone was getting ready to head to a fireworks show. Angela was like I remember her, with her squinty-eyed smile, covered in flannel, with a can and a half of Aqua-Net covering her long curly hair. With bangs like skyscrapers.
So Angela had her mini-boombox with cassette player. Mini? It was long and skinny and looked like something from the future. Remember? Austin. So she took her mini stereo with her everywhere. Her room, the kitchen, the bathroom as she reapplied another coat of hairspray, even in the car as the actual car radio played. It didn’t matter, she was rockin’ her box. What she was playing was even more unusual than just playing it all the time. It was one song. Not an album. A song. Bon Jovi’s “Wanted Dead or Alive”.
Now remember this is ’87, there were no CD’s, no phones that played every song you can think of in the instant you think of it. Although we were the first generation that was able listen to what we wanted while also having it be portable. So if you looked around you would have seen people all over with walkmans playing their cassettes though their headphones. Angela was playing this thing on the boombox. So the effort alone to play this 5 minutes and 7 seconds song, stop the tape, rewind, play the song again, and repeat that process for an entire evening. That’s a tremendous effort. Now keep in mind this was only what I saw, I am certain this was going on all day, possibly days, possibly the entire week since she got the tape.
This was something I admired about Angela. She was always so comfortable in her own skin that she could do something like this without fear of judgement over it. She was perfectly content to listen to this song because it made her feel good over and over again. I wanted to be more like that. Someone who didn't need to apologize for being themselves. She knew who she was, and was proud of it.
I don’t subscribe to the belief that someone’s life can be summed up in a few words or through a list of their accomplishments. If you want to know what Angela accomplished, just look around to all the lives she touched and the others that she will continue to touch through the people that knew her. You can see and hear the love she shared with her family. And if you absolutely need to know her greatest achievement, all you have to do is look at her boys.

Angela, a perfect embodiment of wisdom and intelligence dressed in kindness and gentleness, brought laughter and optimism into our lives. Her adventurous spirit tingled our days with excitement while her creativity and handiness filled it with innovations. Angela's selfless love, generosity, thoughtfulness endeared her to many; she was indeed an angel robed in flesh. As we mourn her passing, we take solace knowing that this caring individual continues to watch over us with abiding love. Indeed, Angela is forever etched in our hearts.

It is with a heavy heart that we bid farewell to Angela. She was a beacon of kindness, whose spirit radiated with humour and friendliness. Synonymous with intelligence, creativity, selflessness and adventurousness, her presence illuminated those around her. A gentle soul steeped in faith, generous in thought and deeds, blooming optimism drawing us closer like moths to the flame of wisdom she emitted. Her love for 80s music will reverberate eternally among us - it pains deeply to lose both her and Uncle Frank so closely but their memories will remain eternal.

Angela, my twin niece. We looked a lil alike, we sound alike and we were so much alike. She never forgot to tell me this about us. We shared many talks together and that is what I’m gonna miss the most. Always telling me how much she loved me and my family. Loved us unconditionally.. Always here for me and my family. All our lives have we had one bad discussion. Always loving eachother and always thanking me for taking care of her Tia’s ( my disabled sisters) the way I did. Always encouraging me with her kind words when I was down. Always telling me how much she missed my daughter in Heaven. They were like sisters and loved each other very much. She was my go to person and Lord knows I’m gonna miss her.. I love u Angela. U will always me my Paloma Blanca. Rest Peacefully My Angel. I know u r chatting away with my Felicia..
