Obituary of Candelario Hernandez
Please share a memory of Candelario to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.
On August 1st, 2004, our beloved father, Candelario Montanez Hernandez was called to our Lord. He is preceded in death by his wife, Mary, his mother and father, Antonio and Herlinda Hernandez, and his brothers, Raymond, Frank, Genaro, Nash, and sister, Sixta.Born February 2, 1920, Candelario grew up on a farm in Seguin Texas. He was the oldest of 8 children. Candelario was a lifelong member of Our Lady of Guadalupe Church. As Eucharistic Ministers, he and Mary ministered to the sick at Brackenridge hospital for over 20 years. He also served as treasurer for the Guadalupe Neighborhood Association.
In 1941 he joined the U.S. Army and was sent to fight in the Asiatic Pacific Theater and participated in the Papuan, New Guinea and Leyte campaigns. In 2001, he shared his WWII experiences with students from U.T. School of Journalism and was published in Narratives, a U.S. Latino and Latina WWII history project.
Candelario is an inspiration and a blessing to us all. Family and friends were always first, next to the Astros, of course. He never stopped in his search for new talents. At 62, he learned to play guitar and played with Mariachi Rayos del Sol. At 82, he learned about computers, at 84 he became a cooking aficionado.
He is survived by his daughters, Maria Candelaria Rios and husband Nick, Susan Cisneros and husband Juan; grandchildren Chris Rios and wife Liza, Andrea Rios, Kathleen Rios, Anthony Rios, Johnny Cisneros and Sarah Cisneros and great grandchildren, Vincent and Victoria Rios. He is also survived by his brothers, Tony and Joe Hernandez and a host of nieces and nephews.
The Cisneros and Rios family would like to thank the special nurses and doctors at Seton Hospital who cared for Dad and all the friends and family who supported us during his illness. Special thanks to the Cannon family. Also, to our cousin, Tony Hernandez who took special care of his burial preparation.
Recitation of the Rosary will be August 4th at 7:30pm at Our Lady of Guadalupe Church. Mass of Christian Burial will be held August 5th at 10:00am with Reverend Father Frank Macias. Rite of Interment will follow at Assumption Catholic Cemetery.
Serving as pallbearers will be Chris Rios, Anthony Rios, Johnny Cisneros, Juan Cisneros, David Hernandez, and John Cannon.
