Obituary of Dennis Garza

Dennis Ray Garza - 42 - Round Rock, TX Dennis passed away March 29 in Austin, TX after a 3 1/2 year battle with inoperable brain cancer. Dennis was born and raised in Corpus Christi, graduating in 1979 from King High School. He lettered in the Debate and Golf teams for 2 years and competed in the Texas State Debate Tournament and State Golf Competitions. He graduated from Texas Tech University where he met the girl of his dreams, Rita, who later became his wife. He attended the University of Texas Law School in Austin and graduated in 1986. He was an avid debator and in law school won the Mock Trial Competition. He worked as a Senior Attorney and Deputy Division Chief for the General Litigation Division under State Attorney General Jim Mattox and became a top state litigator. In 1997, he moved to Dallas to take a position as a litigator for American Airlines. The family returned to his beloved Austin in 2002. His family, civil rights, politics and golf were his passions. He actively participated in local and state politics and served as President of Austin LULAC Council 650 and South Austin Mexican American Democrats. His community service included serving as an officer on the Capital Metro Board, the Hispanic Chamber of Commerce, and the River City Youth Foundation. He was also an active member of Our Lady of Guadalupe Catholic Church in Austin and was involved in the ACTS movement. Survivors include his wife, Rita, two children, Angelica, age 9 and Jonathan, age 6, his devoted parents Arnold and Anita Garza of Round Rock, brothers Arnold David (Tonie) of Irving and Dr. James E. Garza of Arlington, his grandmother Lillie Delgado of Robstown, and many uncles, aunts, cousins, nieces, nephews and many loving friends. Rosary at 7pm Thursday, April 1 at Our Lady of Guadalupe Church. Funeral on Friday at 10:30am, April 2 at Our Lady of Guadalupe Church.
